Alternatives

Alternatives is an investment outside of the four traditional asset classes (Cash, Bonds, Property and Equities). Alternatives can include, but are not limited to precious metals such as gold and copper, as well as investments in water infrastructure and agriculture. Details of the different Alternatives funds you can choose from are listed below.

The Gold Fund is a unit-linked fund that gives you the opportunity to gain exposure to movements in the price of gold. It does this by investing in an Exchange Traded Certificate (ETC), which aims to track the spot price of gold in US dollars.

The Earth Resources Fund is designed to offer investors exposure to the world's physical resources. It is a unit-linked fund with strong growth potential that invests in and targets equal exposure to a range of diverse assets: oil, alternative energy, precious metals and agriculture.

  • Opportunity to invest in a diversified portfolio of non-traditional investments including oil, alternative energy, precious metals and agriculture.
  • A currency risk arises as the majority of the investments held are currently transacted in US$.
  • Indicative allocation of each asset:
    • Oil 20-30%
    • Alternative Energy 20-30%
    • Precious Metals 20-30%
    • Agriculture 20-30%

The Indexed Global Energy & Metals Fund is a unit-linked fund that gives you the opportunity to gain exposure to commodity returns.

(Formerly known as Global Commodities Fund)

  • Assets include: Precious Metals, Industrial metals, Energy.
  • Fund is priced in Euro but the bulk of the commodities are transacted in US$ and as such a currency risk arises for a euro investor.
  • Risk rating: 6

The CommoditiesPLUS Strategy Fund (PIMCO) is a unit-linked fund that gives you the opportunity to gain exposure to commodity returns. It does this by investing in the PIMCO CommoditiesPlus Strategy Fund.

  • Invests in commodities that could include, energy, livestock, grains, metals.
  • Managed by PIMCO Global Advisors (Ireland) Ltd.
  • Some assets invested outside the Eurozone.
  • Risk rating: 5

The Green Resources Fund invests in the renewable energy, power delivery, cleaner fuel, water utility and water equipment industries. Global population growth and economic development are expected to drive demand for clean water supplies and alternative energy sources. This fund is expected to gain from this growth in demand.

  • Opportunity to invest in non-traditional investments: Alternative Energy and Water.
  • The fund currently invests in the following Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs): PowerShares Wilderhill Clean Energy Portfolio and the iShares S&P Global Water ETFs.
  • A currency risk arises as many of the underlying companies operate outside the eurozone.
  • Risk rating: 6
